Iggy pop is such a bad ass. There’s an interview I watched where his manager talked about having to bail him out of jail. The manager shows up and Iggy is drunk, disorderly, and wearing a dress. His manager asked “Ig, why are you wearing a womans dress?” and Iggy replied “I beg to differ, this is a mans dress.”

I don’t get it. Why is it so fashionable, or “cool” even to hate on Kristen Stewart. Her character in Twilight may not have been a good female role model for young Tweens, but why does that responsibility fall solely on her shoulders? And we aren’t even saying we think she’s no Meryl Streep, instead we make these personal attacks like they’re going out of style.
And then there’s these expectations of how females (in general and in the limelight) should behave: Kristen doesn’t fit that mold and it irks us. She isn’t agreeable… because she speaks her mind, she has horrible fashion sense… because she dresses how she feels most comfortable, and she has a bad attitude… because she doesn’t whip out faux smiles on demand - like she’s supposed to; like women are supposed to.
There’s nothing wrong with Emma Watson beig expressive, if that’s truly Emma Watson. So why do we pit these two ladies against each other. Must women always be enemies? Can they not just be uniquely their own self? Can’t that be enough? Let’s stop with all this girl hate nonsense, because that’s all it is - nonsense.

For those of you who don’t know me outside of Tumblr, I’ve currently an undergrad at Columbia College Chicago. I’ve spent the last two years putting together my nonfiction thesis, Called Wilson, in preparation for my upcoming graduation.

The written component was finished earlier this spring, and my plan was to spend the summer turning said writing into a badass print project, complete with letterpress covers and hand-sewn binding. But we all know what happens to the best laid plans, right?

A week after I received a grant to fund half the project, I found out that I was accepted to Teach for America and that my placement was in southern South Dakota. (Yay! I’m moving at the end of May!) Suffice to say, there ain’t no letterpresses in Pine Ridge. That I know of/have access to, anyway.

Which is where you come in! I need your help to make this project a reality. The grant I received only covers half of the project costs and my plans to incrementally buy the rest of the supplies over a six month period are no longer viable. I’ve set the project up on Kickstarter to generate support and distribute awesome rewards for those who can help me out. Can you spare a dollar? How about a reblog, a tweet, or a Facebook share?

As long as women’s natural body hair is called disgusting and inappropriate while men’s isn’t, I am a feminist.

As long as I can’t watch an episode of a popular sitcom without having to sit through multiple sexist comments or “jokes”, I am a feminist.

As long as women have to face the rational fear of being sexually assaulted every time they walk home past dark while men don’t, I am a feminist.

As long as misogyny exists in any country in this world, I am a feminist.

As long as women are being raped, then stoned to death or forced to marry their rapist, I am a feminist.

As long as companies promote men to manager when there are women who are equally as or better qualified, because they find that men look more authoritative, I am a feminist.

As long as women (her choice of clothes, her friendly nature, her weakness, her choice to drink alcohol) get blamed when men rape them, I am a feminist.

As long women’s opinions on online social networks are dismissed with phrases like “tits or gtfo”, “get back to the kitchen”, “are you pms’ing?”, I am a feminist.

As long as dressing like a woman is degrading for men and as long as men are insulted with phrases like “you throw like a woman”, clearly implying that being like a woman is shameful, I am a feminist.

As long as both men are women are expected to work, but taking care of children and the household are still largely considered a woman’s job, I am a feminist.

As long as boys and girls are treated differently, expected to act differently, and surrounded by different toys and colours from the day they are born, I am a feminist.

As long as topless women aren’t allowed in public unless they’re on the cover of a men’s magazine, I am a feminist.

As long as women who have sex frequently are generally told they are “sluts”, “lacking self-respect” and “lacking morals” by both men and women, while men who frequently have sex are “just being men” and it’s “natural for them”, I am a feminist.

As long as there are places where women have to pay more for health insurance than men, I am a feminist.

As long as men experience situations with equal gender representation as female-dominated, and don’t consider a group discussion equal unless there are significantly more men than women participants (as has been proven), I am a feminist.

As long as there are men who think it’s their wife or girlfriend’s duty to have sex with them whenever they want, I am a feminist.

As long as the word feminism (“the movement aimed at equalrights for women”) has a negative connotation, I am a feminist.

As long as misogynistic people exist, I am a feminist.

Women beg Chris Brown to beat them. Where to begin with this... →

terrible

billieisaguysname:

Ladies, a few statistics for you…

  • Every 9 seconds in the US a woman is assaulted or beaten.
  • Around the world, at least one in every three women has been beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused during her lifetime. Most often, the abuser is a member of her own family.
  • Domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women—more than car accidents, muggings, and rapes combined.
  • Studies suggest that up to 10 million children witness some form of domestic violence annually.
  • Nearly 1 in 5 teenage girls who have been in a relationship said a boyfriend threatened violence or self-harm if presented with a breakup.
  • Everyday in the US, more than three women are murdered by their husbands or boyfriends.
  • Ninety-two percent of women surveyed listed reducing domestic violence and sexual assault as their top concern.
  • Domestic violence victims lose nearly 8 million days of paid work per year in the US alone—the equivalent of 32,000 full-time jobs.
  • Based on reports from 10 countries, between 55 percent and 95 percent of women who had been physically abused by their partners had never contacted non-governmental organizations, shelters, or the police for help.
  • The costs of intimate partner violence in the US alone exceed $5.8 billion per year: $4.1 billion are for direct medical and health care services, while productivity losses account for nearly $1.8 billion.
  • Men who as children witnessed their parents’ domestic violence were twice as likely to abuse their own wives than sons of nonviolent parents.

You do not have to walk on your knees

Meanwhile the world goes on.

I would like to start this off by saying I’m a fourteen-year-old girl who adores this blog. I’m a freshman in high school, but this blog has impacted me in the same way it has impacted full-grown women.

A survey of girls in Zimbabwean junior schools in 2000 reported by Amnesty International found 92 per cent had been sexually propositioned by an older man on their way to school, and half of them had experienced unsolicited sexual contact by strangers. Factors such as these mean that, simply by virtue of being born female, millions of children across the world are denied their right to an education. In fact, according to the charity Childline, in South Africa a girl actually has a higher chance of being raped than of learning to read.
